Infertility Awareness Association of Canadas My Story campaign to collect 10,000 stories of infertilityInfertility Awareness Association of Canada’s “My Story” campaign to collect 10,000 stories of infertility

Campaign Encourages Infertile Community to Share their Story with the Ontario Government

Montreal - Wednesday, December 17, 2008 – The Infertility Awareness Association of Canada (IAAC) today called on Ontario’s infertile community to share their stories with the Ontario government. The email-based “My Story” campaign seeks to share the personal stories of those touched by infertility in Ontario with local MPP’s, the Premier and the Ministers of Health and Children and Youth Services. IAAC is hoping to collect more than 10,000 stories documenting the physical, emotional and financial impact of infertility in Ontario.

Despite statistics that suggest 1 in 6 Ontarians faces difficulties starting a family, IAAC believes that this critical public health issue remains too often a private matter. “The My Story Campaign will force Ontario’s politicians to become better aware of the issue and the struggle of their infertile constituents,” says Bev Hanck, Executive Director of IAAC.

According to IAAC, the campaign isn’t only seeking the stories of those individuals and couples facing infertility, but the personal experiences of those who were touched by a loved one’s pursuit of family.

The My Story campaign is being launched months prior to the final report by the province’s Expert Panel on Infertility and Adoption, “in order to help the Ontario government better recognize what’s at stake,” says Bev Hanck.

“Once exposed to Ontario’s infertile community they will see it all,” says Bev Hanck. “
A community filled with great sadness and great joy; resilience and fatigue; hope and despair. Certainly the recent formation of the Expert Panel demonstrated that the government sees us; this campaign will ensure that they know us as well.”

Sophia Mackintosh is all too aware that she is a walking stereotype. After two miscarriages and a failed IVF attempt, she decided to give up trying for a baby and buy a dog instead. With Lulu happily installed in their newly renovated house in Islington, North London, Mackintosh and her husband, James, launched themselves wholeheartedly into the adoption process. Then, five years after that first traumatic miscarriage, she discovered that she was pregnant.

diet affects fertilityTHE LIFESTYLE MATTERS: A recent Harvard study found women who followed a regimen that affected five or more lifestyle factors had a more than 80-percent less relative risk of infertility due to ovulatory disorders compared to women who didn't follow the regimen.

The research team used a scoring system that included dietary and lifestyle factors like protein consumption, carbohydrate consumption, the ratio of monounsaturated fats to trans fats consumed, body mass index (BMI) and physical activity.

Picture Emerging on Genetic Risks of IVFIn November, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published a paper reporting that babies conceived with IVF, or with a technique in which sperm are injected directly into eggs, have a slightly increased risk of several birth defects, including a hole between the two chambers of the heart, a cleft lip or palate, an improperly developed esophagus and a malformed rectum.

The study involved 9,584 babies with birth defects and 4,792 babies without. Among the mothers of babies without birth defects, 1.1 percent had used IVF or related methods, compared with 2.4 percent of mothers of babies with birth defects.

The findings are considered preliminary, and researchers say they believe IVF does not carry excessive risks. There is a 3 percent chance that any given baby will have a birth defect.

IVF doctors worry couples may choose less invasive method that restores natural fertilityIVF doctors worry couples may choose less invasive method that restores natural fertility.

(HealthNewsDigest.com) - LONDON, UK -- Researchers from the International Institute of Restorative Reproductive Medicine (IIRRM) have responded to concerns expressed by infertility specialists that patients might choose NaProTechnology (NPT), over IVF treatment for infertility.

NPT is a new medical approach focused on restoring natural reproductive function rather than bypassing the problem through artificial means. In their response, NPT researchers emphasized that cumulative live birth rates are similar to those from IVF, but with much healthier outcomes for the babies, with no increased risk of multiple births.

The scholarly debate is published in the January/February issue of the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine, and responds to recent research on NPT published in that journal.

NPT helps most couples have a single healthy baby.

Shady Grove Fertiltiy CenterFREDERICK, MD - With the poor economy, It's hard enough to be able to afford just the basic necessities. But it's even harder on couples who want to have children but can't. Now there's hope. A local fertility center is giving women the option to share an egg donor and split the cost.

While the program isn't new, the number of women trying to get pregnant through it is. Shady Grove Fertility Center has seen a 300% increase in participants, and they're not just in the Four State Region, they're coming from all over the world.

Here's how it works: If there's one donor to one recipient, it will cost $52,000. If there's one donor to two recipients, it will cost $37,000. If there's one donor to three recipients, it will cost $29,000, which is the most economically friendly program.

"I just get kind of choked up thinking about it,” says Dr. Melissa Esposito with the Shady Grove Fertility Center. “I think a lot of people have this stereotypical feeling that a lot of patients who do donor egg are older patients who waited a while to have children, but that’s not always the case."

Those who choose participate in the program have a sixty percent chance of getting pregnant.

Another trend the fertility center is seeing during these hard times is more and more women who are choosing to sell their eggs.

Shamu, the killer whaleKiller whales that are nearing menopause make the best moms, a new study finds. This could be the case among humans, though it's less clear.

Killer whales (Orcinus orca) are extremely long-lived marine mammals. While males can live as many as 50 years, female killer whales can live much longer — scientists have even found one female that is thought to be more than 90.

Females can have their first calves (as baby killer whales are called) as early as age 10, and can continue having offspring until their early 40s, when menopause can start to kick in.

Just as in humans, menopause ends a female killer whale's ability to reproduce. Just why humans, whales and other mammals have evolved this trait is unknown. Some scientists think menopause could simply be due to physiological deterioration that comes with age, while others think it could increase the fitness of older females.

say your prayers - statue on cemetery pere lachaise, parisA study in the US Journal of Reproductive Medicine found that prayer doubles the success rate of IVF.

When volunteers were asked to pray for certain couples having fertility treatment, the women who were mentioned in the prayers had a 50 per cent pregnancy rate - twice the level of success compared to those who were not mentioned.

Like many health studies looking at prayer, the IVF patients had no idea what was happening - so their own faith did not influence results. The findings are backed by an earlier study which found that prayers boosted the health of heart patients.
