CHICAGO, June 18 (UPI) -- Fatherhood might be far from the minds of most young men, but their behavior when young can contribute to later male infertility, a U.S. researcher said.

Dr. Suzanne Kavic, a reproductive specialist at the Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, said heat generated by hot tubs, excessive laptop use, or using boxers over briefs can impact sperm production, making it difficult to conceive down the road.

Study asks why women go abroad for fertility treatmentAmsterdam - Despite advanced facilities at home, many Dutch women travel abroad for fertility treatments - a phenomena which is echoed right across Europe. Why, when the Netherlands seemingly offers excellent treatments?

That question will be answered on Sunday June 28, when academics unveil the results of the first-ever international study into the issue at the annual conference of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) in Amsterdam.

"We know that women increasingly travel around the globe to seek the fertility treatment they want," Dutch ESHRE-chairman Joep Geraedts tells the German Press Agency

The Donor Network AllianceThrough a unique and effective collaboration of egg donor agencies through out the United States, The Donor Network Alliance (DNA) - the industry's first ever web-based collective of egg donors - has quickly become one of the largest egg donation resources in the country with more than one thousand diverse and multi-cultural egg donor candidates.

Launched just over three months ago and already generating widespread industry recognition, the DNA website is a robust portal of potential egg donors listed with agencies throughout the entire U.S. In order to find the perfect donor, the comprehensive yet easy-to-use database enables intended parents to search specific donor parameters such as ethnicity, education, phenotype and more. The system then automatically generates an email that is sent directly to the registered donor agency of the individual donors.

Populating rapidly with egg donor candidates across the county, the simple functionality of the DNA website not only streamlines the process, it also saves aspiring parents a considerable amount of time and money during an already difficult and emotional fertility journey. For participating agencies, it provides an increase in exposure and expanded opportunities for their donors and intended parents.

Robin von Halle, DNA Co-Founder explains that the goal was to build a program to give intended parents more control over their egg donor search process, as well as create a positive unification that did not previously exist within the industry. "We are delighted to bring together some of the most credible and esteemed agencies across the country, while better serving the needs of the infertility community. We have close to 2,000 additional donor candidates to add to the website and it's our goal to reach 8,000 by the end of the year," she adds.

DNA began with three competing egg donor agencies in Chicago (Alternative Reproductive Resources (ARR), The Center for Egg Options Illinois (CEO) and ConceiveAbilities), and now collaborates with agencies from California, Massachusetts, Texas, Washington DC, Florida, Colorado, Arizona, Minnesota, Georgia and more. The website will soon be launching internationally, in order to provide family building options to many international fertility patients often restricted by limited resources or reproductive laws in their own country.

Robin von Halle will be attending the 25th Annual Meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in Amsterdam, The Netherlands from June 28 - July 1 and will be available to discuss this program and third party reproductive options in the U.S. and abroad.

Amazing fertility boosting food planAs new research links red meat to slower sperm, we look at how the right diet can dramatically improve a couple's chances of conceiving.

Having trouble getting pregnant? Experts now believe that following the right diet could be the single most important factor for successful conception.

A Spanish study recently found that men could boost their sperm counts by eating less red meat and fatty food, and more fruit and veg.

Meanwhile, research at Harvard University also found that women who made dietary changes reduced their risk of infertility by as much as 80%.

Special brain cells talk fertilityImage by Hljod.Huskona via Flickr

Scientists have discovered how the fertility part of the brain communicates; a finding they claim could pave the way for new treatment methods.

An international team, led by University of Otago, has found that fertility is controlled by a thousand or so special neurons that are linked by long, branch-like dendrites instead of the usual synapses.

The study focuses on a small and relatively scattered population of cells, known as gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons, whose mode of communication has been unknown until now.

What most women dont know about fertility Have you ever found yourself talking to a friend about your fertility struggle, when a blank, horrified look begins to crawl across her face? She's probably blissfully ignorant about all a person can go through to conceive.

Except for those of us who've been forced to learn firsthand about things like stimming, egg retrieval, male factor infertility, and reproductive endocrinology, these terms may as well be Greek to most people.

For a "fertile", the concept of getting pregnant is usually something to the effect of get frisky; sperm meets egg; buy home pregnancy test; have baby.

Boxers or briefs? Many believe that the wrong answer to this question can lead to an increased risk of low sperm count or infertility. But are they right?Tight briefs, red meat, varicose veins or stress? Which has been shown to actually reduce a man's sperm count and lead to infertility?

Low sperm count is an uncomfortable subject for some men to discuss, which may be why so many urban legends have sprung up about its causes.

While many grow up hearing that drinking Mountain Dew or shunning boxers can create barriers to fatherhood later on, studies haven't backed up those claims.

Fathers Day can be another painful reminder that their family is not yet a realityFather's Day is a day for fun with dad and special treats made just for him. But for couples struggling with infertility, Father's Day can be another painful reminder that their family is not yet a reality.

Just as many women face infertility obstacles, many men face the challenge of overcoming medical problems that impede their ability to become a father. Of the more than 7.3 million cases of infertility in the United States, 30 percent are attributed to the male.

Reverse medical tourism driven by donor egg availability and lower cost, innovative IVF financing options

More and more couples from the United Kingdom are crossing the ocean for donor egg treatment at
Shady Grove Fertility Center, the Washington/Baltimore area's largest in vitro fertilization (IVF) and fertility clinic. More than five dozen British patients received IVF treatment there last year, which was a 350-percent increase over 2007; most were donor egg recipients.

In a reversal of the medical tourism flow of Americans overseas in search of less costly elective medical procedures, many British fertility patients who need to use donor eggs rather than their own are flocking to Shady Grove Fertility Center (SGFC). In the UK, where egg donors are neither paid nor guaranteed anonymity, donor eggs are scarce, wait times can be as long as three years and choice of donor is limited. In contrast, Shady Grove Fertility not only pays donors, but also offers an innovative way to reduce waiting time and cost for donor eggs. In addition to the traditional donor egg method of matching each donor with a single recipient, Shady Grove Fertility Center patients also have the option of enrolling in what's called "Shared Donor Egg," a unique program through which one donor's eggs may be shared by two or three recipients. Whichever option a patient selects, pregnancy rates are comparable.

The collaborative treatment process involves only two visits to SGFC per cycle of donor egg treatment. On the first visit to SGFC, the male partner's sperm is frozen and an egg donor is selected. The couple then returns to the UK, where an SGFC partner clinic provides additional treatment and support -- such as hormone injections to prepare the woman's uterus for pregnancy -- while SGFC harvests the donor's eggs and fertilizes them in vitro with the thawed sperm. Only then does the couple return to Maryland for embryo transfer. This streamlined, trans-Atlantic system results in pregnancy success rates comparable to those of couples using fresh sperm.

"In some countries, infertility treatments are very limited or restricted and may even be illegal," said Michael J. Levy, M.D., Shady Grove Fertility Center's founder, who in late 2007 began establishing relationships with doctors and fertility clinics in the UK. "We at Shady Grove Fertility are proud that word has reached the other side of the Atlantic about our innovative financing programs, our strong emphasis on quality patient care, and our outstanding IVF success rates."

Using the UK program as a model, SGFC has a late June trip planned to Ireland to explore setting up a similar set of relationships with potential partner clinics, as well as interested patients.

Fertility for AllU.S. Sen. Kristin Gillibrand (D-New York) has introduced a bill that would require health insurers to pay for advanced fertility treatments the Senator says would help the 1 in 8 American couples affected by infertility to bear children.

Gillibrand’s Family Building Act would require insurers to cover Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) treatments including in vitro fertilization (IVF), gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) and Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI). The bill would not confine eligibility for ART coverage within a certain age range.

Thousands of women struggle with infertility each year, with insurance companies denying access to the fertility treatments that make the difference for so many,” Senator Gillibrand said in a press release.

Stress affects fertilityResearchers from University of California, Berkeley claim to have found a missing piece of puzzle about how stress causes sexual dysfunction.

The study showed that stress delivers a double whammy on
reproductive system and fertility.

It is already known that stress boosts levels of
stress hormones - glucocorticoids such as cortisol - that inhibit the body''s main sex hormone, gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH), and subsequently suppresses sperm count, ovulation and sexual activity.

Paxil Linked to Damaged Sperm, Could Impair Male FertilityIt is widely known that some anti-depressants can affect sexual functioning in men and women. A new study has found that men taking paroxetine—brand names Seroxat and Paxil — can experience impaired fertility and sperm damage, says the Chicago Tribune.

The New York research revealed that nearly half of the [men] taking Seroxat and Paxil tested with increased levels ofsperm fragmentation,” said the Chicago Tribune, which added that the study appears online today in the journal Fertility & Sterility.

“It’s fairly well known that SSRI anti-depressants negatively impact erectile function and ejaculation. This study goes one step further, demonstrating that they can cause a major increase in genetic damage to sperm,” said Dr. Peter Schlegel, the study’s senior author and professor of reproductive medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, quoted the Chicago Tribune.

Second miracle baby for infertile mumThey say lightning never strikes twice. The fact that it ever struck at all in my case was a miracle.

Having spent three years at the frontline of fertility treatment undergoing every medical procedure known to modern man — including more than 1,000 injections and a total change of white blood cells — I managed by some fluke to get pregnant on my own (although I was on Chinese herbs at the time).

The doctors were shocked. My husband was stunned and I was totally delighted.

And now four years on, with our miracle baby Allegra now at school and all the odds still firmly stacked against me (aged 41, I am very much in the “maternal crone” category), I have somehow managed to do it again.
