In a cross-sectional study involving 171 couples visiting an infertility clinic, results indicate a high prevalence of cobalamin deficiency.

Mean cobalamin levels were 259.2 pg/mL in men and 275.1 pg/mL in women, with 35.5% of men and 23.3% of women showing cobalamin deficiency.

Additionally, 39% of all men with an abnormal semen analysis showed cobalamin deficiency.

Thus, the authors conclude, "This study questions whether higher rates of male infertility in Israel are partially ascribable to cobalamin deficiency. Recommendation for supplementation in both males and females to achieve high-normal levels of cobalamin would be prudent."

The number of women having babies in their 40s has more than doubled in the past 20 years, figures yesterday showed.

There were 12.6 births per 1,000 women in the age group last year against 5.1 in 1988, the Office for National Statistics found.

Those aged 30-34 continue to have the highest fertility overall with 112.3 births per 1,000.

The average age of new mums was unchanged last year at 29.3, despite previous rises every year since the mid-1970s.

OTTAWA — Older moms delivered a slight baby boom in 2007, a statistical jump that will continue to fray the national patchwork of child-care services, advocates warn.

Statistics Canada reported Tuesday that 367,864 babies were born that year - 13,247 or 3.7 per cent more than in 2006.

The number of births rose in all age groups, particularly among mothers aged 30 to 34, and in every province and territory except Prince Edward Island and Yukon.

The number of babies born in 2007 was the highest since 1995 and the fifth straight annual increase. More than half the jump in births, 56 per cent, was traced to women aged 30 or older.

Many will seek alternative treatments, including acupuncture, herbal remedies and religious intervention, according to a new Ohio State University Medical Center study. The findings were published in a recent issue of the Journal of Reproductive Medicine.

South Texas patients are helping to compare two oral drugs to boost fertility: a commonly-used pill called Clomid and a newer pill called Letrozole first used for breast cancer patients. Both lead to stimulation of egg growth, but they work in different ways.

“Because they work through different mechanisms, we’re hopeful that maybe certain women will benefit from one versus the other, or maybe all women will benefit from the new medication,” Brzyski explained. “There’s always that great hope.”

It's not hot laptop computers on men's laps, a polluted environment, gynecological infections or a junk-food diet: The main reason for the rise in human infertility is an evolutionary battle between the sexes, according to a biologist at Tel Aviv University.

One in 10 couples are unable to conceive, and many external factors have been blamed. But evolutionary biologist Dr. Oren Hasson of TAU's zoology department suggests in the latest issue of the journal Biological Reviews that male and female reproductive organs are "currently involved in an evolutionary arms race, and the fight isn't over yet."

Fertility treatments should be publicly funded, an expert panel found following a year-long study on infertility and adoption.

The report, titled “Raising Expectations,” suggests that Ontarians are making poor choices when it comes to seeking services to help reproduce, mainly due to the high cost of such services. Some opt for treatments that transfer numerous embryos at once, which is more likely to result in multiple births.

The panel suggests the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) cover three cycles of in-vitro treatments for women under the age of 42, and include infertility clinics in the public system.

Using a beeping Basal Body Thermometer (BBT) and worried about disturbing your partner's sleep? Here's a couple of ideas:

Idea #1 - Before turning it on and putting it in your mouth, tuck it between your neck and shoulder. After using a BBT for 5+ years, I have noticed that turning it on and putting it straight into my mouth can take anywhere from 16-22 beeps! But when I warmed it up first, before turning it on, it only takes 8-12 beeps.

Idea #2 - Experiment! It's said that you need to take your temperature the moment you wake up, before you even move - but I found that my temp was much more stable. I can lay there and wait till hubby gets up for work, if it's soon - or I can even get up myself, take my thermometer into the bathroom and take it there.

How do I know? I experimented! I took my temp as soon as I woke up, then again after my hubby got up and again when I went into the bathroom. For me there was no change. It might not be the same for you, but you never know till you try!

On the Women Over 40 With High FSH message board, there is a post called the Over 40 Timeline. It is a post that contains the successes of the women from that board. Whenever someone has a baby, they come back to add themselves to that post.

Many times though, the ladies are so busy after the birth that they don't have time to come back and post (which is completely understandable), so this isn't a comprehensive list.

But still, the number of success cases is amazing. It is a truly inspiring list. I refer to it often when my spirits are in need of a lift, like now!

Scientific dogma has long asserted that females are born with their entire lifetime supply of eggs, and once they're gone, they're gone. New findings suggest that in nematode worms, at least, this is not necessarily so.

Molecular physiologist Marc Van Gilst, Ph.D., and colleagues at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle report that during starvation, sexually mature adult worms stop ovulating and the germline component of their reproductive system – the sex cells, including mature and maturing eggs – dies off and leaves behind nothing but a few stem cells.

However, once normal food conditions resume, the conserved stem cells can produce a brand new crop of sex cells, complete with youthful fertile eggs. This turning back of the reproductive clock took place in tiny C. elegans soil worms that were up to15 times older than worms in their reproductive prime that were fed normally.
