NHS urged to act on infertilityCouples should be given three free cycles of IVF to fight the "social disorder" of infertility, a leading expert has claimed.

Sam Abdalla, medical director of the Lister Fertility Clinic in London, said the NHS was failing to implement a 2004 NICE directive calling for free treatment.

"Infertility is not only a disease, it is also a social disorder with a profound effect on the individual, the family and wider society," Mr Abdalla said.

The doctor is offering 21 free cycles of IVF to mark the 21st birthday of the Lister Fertility Clinic, treatment at which has resulted in more than 10,000 births.

Infertile Couples Turn To Embryo AdoptionCINCINNATI -- Some couples unable to get pregnant have turned to an unusual form of adoption. The couples are getting pregnant with another couples' embryo. Jennifer Schanne and her husband endured four miscarriages before turning to in-vitro fertilization.

Fertility Treatment May Produce Fewer Baby BoysNEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The number of baby boys conceived by a fertility treatment known as ICSI may be lower than what is produced by Mother Nature, a new study suggests.

On average, there are 105 baby boys born for every 100 girls -- a natural advantage that helps balance out the higher number of deaths among male fetuses and infants. But in the new study, researchers found that this male-to-female birth ratio seems to be reversed when infants are conceived through intracytoplasmic sperm injection, or ICSI.

Making Babies by Dr. Sami DavidIn the interview with Julie Menin for her Give and Take program, Dr. David says most fertility problems can be explained, and often the explanation – and the fix – is very simple and does not require more complicated measures such as IVF. “I don’t believe in unexplained infertility,” says David.

Some of the most common possible reasons for infertility:

· the woman runs or exercises too much

· the man takes tub baths or Jacuzzi

· infections in the man

· mild and therefore undetected infections in the woman

· sperm antibodies, in which the man could be allergic to his own sperm or the woman could be allergic to sperm

· underweight and overweight women

· environmental issues such as hormones in red meat, pesticides, chemicals in makeup; any of these might have an effect, and often more profoundly on men’s sperm

Dr. David says it’s up to a woman’s doctor to play medical detective to determine what’s wrong. “You really have to delve into it in great detail,” he says.

AMH assessment is also useful in fertility assessment as it provides a guide to ovarian reserve and identifies women that may need to consider either egg freezing or trying for a pregnancy sooner rather than later if their long-term future fertility is poor.

Measuring AMH alone may be misleading as high levels occur in conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome and therefore AMH levels should be considered in conjunction with a transvaginal scan of the ovaries to assess antral follicle count.

New genetic research appears to create healthy embryos that will grow into healthy children. Iris WaichlerBritish scientists at Newcastle University have just released information on a new technique they have created that will impact the world of infertility treatment. Their original research goal was to prevent children from getting inherited medical disorders.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The technique as described by the British researchers was to "prevent diseases by altering human embryos, which are the product of two mothers and one father." Researchers had been working with a woman who had mitochondrial disease which she passed to her daughter. The researchers determined that they could, "prevent the passing of mitochondrial disease in a child by extracting nuclear DNA from a mother with mitochondrial disease and a father, then injecting that DNA into a donor egg from a woman without mitochondrial disease."

What the Numbers Wont Tell YouAny woman who is struggling with fertility is likely to have dozens of numbers on her mind: bbt temps, sperm counts, follicle counts, uterine lining, estrogen, FSH, HCG, dosages of medications, age, numbers of cells, percents of morphology, success rates for clinics, success rates for procedures, days till ovulation, days till the next test... the list could go on and on.

Unfortunately, all too often these numbers become an identity for what a woman believes is her future. I cannot say how often I’ve heard a woman summarize her situation by saying something like:

“Well, my FSH is 30.”
“But my luteal phase is only 8 days long.”
“The numbers aren’t doubling.”
“I’ve got a 10% chance with my own eggs.”

These statements seem like simple facts, but they often signify so much more: I’m afraid, I’m too old, I’ve waited too long, There’s something wrong with me, There’s nothing I can do, I’m waiting to have a miscarriage, My heart is breaking, I don’t think I’ll ever be a mother. Somehow, in some clinical way, the numbers make it easier to say.

When maternal age and number of previous miscarriages were taken into account, those women who were obese were shown to have a higher chance of a further miscarriage Photo: PAObese women run a greater risk of repeat miscarriages and should be warned to lose weight before they try and become pregnant again, according to a new study.

Researchers at St Mary's Hospital in London found that obese women who had suffered one miscarriage had a significantly increased risk of a further miscarriage compared to those who were of a normal weight.

The 11-year study investigated the effect of body mass index (BMI) on unexplained recurrent miscarriages. The women had their BMI measured and were placed into one of four categories: underweight; normal; overweight; and obese.

They said that women should avoid getting pregnant when there were high levels of pollution in the air.

Testing diesel fumes on fertilised eggs in the laboratory, the scientists found that the pollution could cause a reduction in the number of cells in one part of the embryo.
