Angel La Liberte is not one to shy away from a challenge.

In October the now 49-year-old mother of two launched Flower Power Mom, a Web site aimed at providing information and support for mothers older than 40. The site has since taken off, she says.

"It's gone gangbusters since then," said La Liberte, who has a 7-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter. "We're a growing demographic, but no one's talking about it."

Women undergoing IVF would be better “letting go” and relaxing than believing that exercise or prayer can increase their chances of having a child, according a new study.

Would-be mothers who coped with the stress of fertility treatment by accepting that there was little they could do to change the outcome were more likely to get pregnant, psychologists found.

Those able to ‘go with the flow’ were almost twice as likely to conceive, researchers found, after they adjusted for the patients' age, cause of infertility and the number of cycles.

As if more evidence was needed to combat air pollution caused from burning fossil fuels, two recently released reports articulate a human toll that may be higher than previously imagined.

The studies, both out of Brazil, measure how air pollution lowers fertility in men and can complicate pregnancies in women--problems likely to be compounded by the rapid urbanization taking place in the developing world where access to healthcare is much more limited.

With reproductive rights being such a hot-button topic internationally, it's a wonder why more attention isn't paid to combating pollution on this basis or why those responsible for perpetuating fossil-fuels aren't held culpable for endangering them.

Daily sex (or ejaculating daily) for seven days improves men’s sperm quality by reducing the amount of DNA damage, according to an Australian study presented today.

"The optimal number of days of ejaculation might be more or less than seven days, but a week appears manageable and favourable. It seems safe to conclude that couples with relatively normal semen parameters should have sex daily for up to a week before the ovulation date. In the context of assisted reproduction, this simple treatment may assist in improving sperm quality and ultimately achieving a pregnancy. In addition, these results may mean that men play a greater role in infertility than previously suspected, and that ejaculatory frequency is important for improving sperm quality, especially as men age and during assisted reproduction cycles"

Dr Greening said he thought the reason why sperm quality improved with frequent ejaculation was because the sperm had a shorter exposure in the testicular ducts and epididymis to reactive oxygen species – very small molecules, high levels of which can damage cells. "The remainder of the men who had an increase in DFI might have a different explanation for their sperm DNA damage" he concluded.

It's been a decade of older mothers and of fertility treatments becoming the norm. It started with Cherie Blair's high-profile pregnancy at the age of 45 in 2000, and ended with a British woman of 66 giving birth to an IVF baby created with a donor egg.

I don't know if getting up three times a night is any easier in your youth: I only know that it was made possible for me by the fact I was always keen to see my miraculous and lovely baby - even at three in the morning. One thing about older mothers is that they're very grateful.

In many ways, this decade of egg counts, dirty nappies, milky bottles and toddler taming has been the best one of them all.
