Tackling the male fertility taboo

Sperm which have limited movement is a common male fertility problem

A conference at Queen's University in Belfast is to discuss the growing problem of male infertility. BBC Northern Ireland health correspondent Marie-Louise Connolly explores a sensitive problem.

"It becomes a very, very dark place that you go into - you think it must be your wife that has the problem - never do you think it could be you the man," William Steenson told me.

New network launched to help women get pregnant before it's too late

A NATIONAL network has been launched to help make sure women don't miss out on having babies because they are leaving it too late.

The UK Body Clock Network are offering all women over 30 a Body Clock Test at centres across Britain to check their future fertility. It is hoped the fertility "MOT" will help women realize the importance of age when it comes to conceiving a child.

Unexplained Infertility

In the interview with Julie Menin for her Give and Take program, Dr. David says most fertility problems can be explained, and often the explanation – and the fix – is very simple and does not require more complicated measures such as IVF. “I don’t believe in unexplained infertility,” says David.

Some of the most common possible reasons for infertility:

· the woman runs or exercises too much

· the man takes tub baths or Jacuzzi

· infections in the man

· mild and therefore undetected infections in the woman

· sperm antibodies, in which the man could be allergic to his own sperm or the woman could be allergic to sperm

· underweight and overweight women

· environmental issues such as hormones in red meat, pesticides, chemicals in makeup; any of these might have an effect, and often more profoundly on men’s sperm

Dr. David says it’s up to a woman’s doctor to play medical detective to determine what’s wrong. “You really have to delve into it in great detail,” he says.

AMH assessment is also useful in fertility assessment as it provides a guide to ovarian reserve and identifies women that may need to consider either egg freezing or trying for a pregnancy sooner rather than later if their long-term future fertility is poor.Measuring AMH alone may be misleading as high levels occur in conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome and therefore AMH levels should be considered in conjunction with a transvaginal scan of the ovaries to assess antral follicle count.

It also has the potential to rationalize the program of ovulation induction and decisions about the number of embryos to transfer in assisted reproduction techniques to maximize pregnancy success rates whilst minimizing the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS)
